ARTNET REVIEWS AIPAD 2011 AND HIGHLIGHTS MONA KUHN & TODD SELBY

New York City, March 17, 2011 -- a beautiful spring day, sunny and fresh. But nice weather is a commonplace. The AIPAD Photography Show comes to town but once a year.

At first glance, the gray-carpeted grid of booths at the Park Avenue Armory, filled to the brim with photos both black-and-white and color (a few even move, digitally), is not all that exciting. Photography by definition mirrors the physical world, and it’s easy to fill your eyes with the familiar.

ALANA WOLF AT BURNAWAY REVIEWS TODD SELBY

If you are like most humans living on earth, The Selby has never set foot in Your Place. But if you are sufficiently interesting, well-connected, and, above all, in possession of a certain creative panache, you may not want to rule out the possibility of a visitation.

The Selby is in Your Place, showing at Jackson Fine Art in Buckhead through March 25, 2011, introduces Atlanta audiences to the work of blogger and photographer Todd Selby. The Selby, as he is known, has featured his friends and acquaintances in their natural habitats on theselby.com since 2008, and his following has grown from embryonically cultic to an enthusiastic adoption by some of the most powerful names in fashion and design.

TAG CHRISTOF OF 2DM / BLOGAZINE REVIEWS TODD SELBY

Todd Selby – as in The Selby – is at long last making his gallery debut. Featured alongside the prolific and renowned French-American portrait photographer Elliott Erwitt, the ensemble show is sure to be a landmark look at the evolving practice of portraiture. By capturing subjects – carefully considered and extraordinarily creative subjects – within the natural habitats of their eccentric and particular home or work spaces, Selby manages, fluently and effortlessly, to construct images that leave a 360° impression.

FELICIA FEASTER INTERVIEWED TODD SELBY IN THE ATLANTAN

Called the “Horst of the hip set” by The New York Times, Brooklyn-based lensman Todd Selby, 33, offers a very different peak into private lives with his eclectic cast of global boho-istas slinking about their funky digs in his stylish theselby.com blog and his recent book from Abrams, The Selby is in Your Place. Selby’s eccentric approach to portraiture has gained him access to an astonishing array of homes, from Chanel uber-designer Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris space to the bibelot-dense worlds of Lauran Canyon, East Village and Tokyo hipsters.

WENDELL BROCK INTERVIEWS ELLIOTT ERWITT FOR THE AJC

Elliott Erwitt has spent most of his life living out of a suitcase. He was born in Paris, grew up in Italy and, since 1957, has been a peripatetic, New York-based shooter for the prestigious Magnum photo agency, a gig that has frequently positioned him on the sidelines of history.

New York, 1954: He snaps Marilyn Monroe on the set of “The Seven Year Itch,” her skirt dancing in the breeze of a subway grate.

Moscow, 1959: He records Nixon angrily pointing his finger at Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev at the height of the Cold War.

Washington, 1963: He captures Jackie Kennedy at her husband’s burial at Arlington National Cemetery, looking devastated under a black veil, clutching a folded American flag to her breast.

CATHERINE FOX REVIEWS ANGELA WEST AND ROGER BALLEN FOR THE AJC

Over the course of a productive decade, Angela West has tried her hand at art history’s venerable genres: landscape, portraiture, still life. In “Trigger,” her evocative exhibition at Jackson Fine Art, the Atlanta photographer adds trompe l’oeil to the list.

Translated literally, as “fool the eye,” it celebrates the kind of verisimilitude in painting that photography just about put out of business. Crisp images of dead fowl, trussed and hanging on strings, and folded notepaper casting shadows on the wall bring to mind the likes of 19th-century American artist John Peto.

Roger Ballen pushes us off a cliff in “Boarding House,” a series of disturbing tableaux he’s concocted using raggedy toys, live animals, disembodied hands and feet and his own graffiti, set in a squalid interior, which, like everything else in his pictures, bears a patina of grime and neglect.

POST-HER REVIEW ON BURNAWAY

Megan Norman recently wrote a review of POST-her for BURNAWAY.

POST-her offers diverse views of Modern Women

I ventured to the opening of POST-her at Jackson Fine Art’s new Westside Project Space hoping to see quality art presented around a strong central concept. I was not disappointed. The show displays a wide variety of portraits of women, all exhibited in the same format, that challenge the idea of traditional portraiture.
