Angela West Biography Angela West (b. 1971) captures the delicate interplay between time, memory, and place in her evocative body of work. Celebrated for her ability to navigate the intimate and communal aspects of life in the American South, West works within the traditional genres of portraiture, landscape, and still life—from the teenage-girl portrait studies of her Sweet 16 series to landscapes of her native Georgia and still lives that mark the passage of time. Her recent work merges photography and painting into a personal exploration of domesticity and its historical impact on women's artistic expression, examining how the constraints of domestic life—particularly after marriage and children—shape a woman's freedom to explore the world. Painting in acrylic directly onto high-gloss photographs, West blends romantic, symbolically feminine imagery with titles drawn from feminist literature and mythology, opening a dialogue between the hand and the machine while conveying equal parts affection and unsentimental realism. Born and raised in Dahlonega, Georgia, Angela West earned her BFA from the University of Georgia in 1995 and went on to receive her MFA in photography from Yale University in 2000. Her deep connection to her hometown and her perspective as a female artist in the South remain central to her practice. Angela West lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. Angela West's honors include the George Sakier Memorial Award for Excellence in Photography, received during her graduate studies at Yale, and a 2009 Artadia Award recognizing her contributions to contemporary photography. Angela West's photographs are held in major public collections, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., as well as the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. Her work also belongs to prominent private holdings such as the Sir Elton John Collection. She has exhibited widely, with presentations at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kyiv, Modern 07 in Munich, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and her work was most recently featured in the traveling exhibition A Long Arc: Photography and the American South Since 1850, which originated at the High Museum of Art in 2023. Angela West has shown with Jackson Fine Art for more than 25 years, appearing in six solo exhibitions with the gallery.
