Todd Hido Biography

Todd Hido (b. 1968) is an American photographer best known for his cinematic, atmospheric images of suburban homes, empty landscapes, and interiors. Born in Kent, Ohio, and based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hido earned a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University and an MFA from the California College of the Arts. Working primarily in color, he photographs ordinary places - especially houses at night illuminated from within - to evoke themes of memory, loneliness, mystery, and the psychological landscape of contemporary America. His images often blur the line between documentary photography and cinematic fiction, encouraging viewers to imagine the unseen narratives behind each scene. Hido has published more than a dozen influential photobooks, including House Hunting (2001), Outskirts (2002), Roaming (2004), A Road Divided (2010), and Excerpts from Silver Meadows (2013). His photographs are held in major museum collections, including the Getty Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
