Los Angeles–based artist Matthew Brandt discusses his distinctive approach to photography and a new body of work he created for Atlanta. Brandt uses handmade photographic processes that harken back to the medium’s earliest days to make images that explore history and place. He often incorporates physical elements from his subjects—such as water from a lake or dust from a construction site—into the finished piece to give the work a distinct sense of materiality.
