As he prepares to release his latest book, Color Pattern Texture: The Foundation to Make Your Home Your Own (Union Square Press), interior designer Vern Yip checks in to weigh in on one of the fiercest trends prowling through design this season: animal-inspired elements. From statement-making patterns to subtle textures, the look brings the wild— stylishly—indoors. “From animal pattern-inspired prints to the infusion of animal associated textures and the incorporation of actual animal shapes, homeowners are finding inspiration in the animal kingdom to better connect to our environment while enlivening their spaces,” says Yip. “Though classic cheetah, tiger and zebra patterns are still very much in style, novel ways of incorporating animal inspiration have seen a major surge and are helping to keep home interiors feeling fresh and exciting.” For Yip, the appeal lies in the versatility: a whisper of zebra in a minimalist rug, sculptural avian accents perched just so or even the luxe texture of faux ostrich leather dressing a console.
