Ms. Taylor-Johnson, what drives you to take self-portraits?
I often think about self-portraits as a self-investigation almost, where I am physically, emotionally and mentally checking in with myself. It's hard to explain, but in my book The Self and the Portrait, I write that I'm looking for the secret of my internal landscape in this blink of an eye moment. So sometimes I'm going through life, and then I start getting this feeling of: what is this moment? What does it look like? What does it feel like? How do I best express that? The expression starts to shape into an idea. It becomes something, and it becomes something that I have to seize upon. Something that I really need to follow through with.
