Candida Höfer Biography

Candida Höfer (b. 1944, Eberswalde, Germany) is a renowned German photographer known for her large-scale, meticulously composed images of grand public interiors - libraries, opera houses, museums, and palaces - captured devoid of human presence. A student of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the 1970s, Höfer inherited the Bechers' typological rigor and conceptual clarity, applying these principles to the spaces people build and inhabit collectively. Her photographs, often taken with a large-format camera, emphasize symmetry, light, and spatial harmony, encouraging viewers to reflect on the cultural significance of architecture and the silent traces of human activity.

Höfer's decision to exclude people from her images amplifies the atmosphere of quiet monumentality, allowing architecture to speak for itself. Rather than documenting spaces in use, she reveals their inner life - their structure, rhythm, and function - as if paused in time. Her work has been widely exhibited internationally, including a solo presentation at the German Pavilion during the 2003 Venice Biennale. Höfer lives and works in Cologne, and her photographs are held in major public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
