Sarah Moon Biography

Sarah Moon (b. 1941, France) is a French photographer and filmmaker renowned for atmospheric, dreamlike imagery that transformed the language of fashion photography. After beginning her career as a model in the 1960s, Moon turned to photography in 1968 and quickly became known for her soft focus, muted palettes, and cinematic sense of narrative. Her influential collaborations with designers and fashion houses including Chanel, Comme des Garçons, Dior, Cacharel, and Issey Miyake helped redefine fashion imagery in the 1970s and beyond.

Working between fashion, portraiture, and personal projects, Moon developed a distinctly poetic visual language marked by blur, grain, shadow, and an evocative sense of memory and transience. Alongside her photographic practice, she has directed numerous films and published seminal books including 1,2,3,4,5 and Dior by Sarah Moon.

Moon was awarded the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award for photography in 1985 and the Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1995. Her work is held in numerous museum collections including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the George Eastman House, Rochester; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, among others. It has also been the subject of major exhibitions at institutions including the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg.

"I think of the relationship between photography and time, the constant allusion to loss, to memory, to death-that strange alchemy between desire and chance. It's what my father called 'wishful thinking.'"
