For Private, Mona Kuhn — renowned for her frank and immediate nude portraits — turns her attention to minutiae in the heart of the American Desert in both Mojave and Arizona, treating organic material with a new sense of isolation and the same intimacy that has characterized her portraiture. The photographs included in this exhibition retain the dreamlike quality of her earlier work, while expanding into a new direction of abstraction. Kuhn spent two years traveling around and shooting the American West, and the result is a series with the hallucinatory spirit of a vision quest.
